The Virginia Wine Coalition’s Secret Shopper Program is designed to help wineries gain valuable, unbiased insights into their visitor experience. Through anonymous visits conducted by trained evaluators, the program assesses key aspects of hospitality, tasting room engagement, product knowledge, and overall brand presentation. Participating wineries receive detailed feedback reports highlighting strengths, areas for improvement, and practical recommendations to enhance customer satisfaction, staff performance, and sales conversion. By benchmarking across the state, this initiative helps elevate Virginia’s reputation for world-class wine and exceptional guest experiences—one tasting room at a time.

Who Conducts the Visits

All secret shopper visits are carried out by carefully trained hospitality professionals who have completed a comprehensive program developed by the Coalition. Each shopper is instructed to behave as a genuine guest—blending in naturally, observing staff interactions, and recording observations only after the visit. Our 30+ question evaluations follow structured criteria covering everything from parking and signage to tasting flow, staff knowledge, cleanliness, and upselling techniques.

Confidentiality and Reporting

Each winery receives its own individual report, shared only with that winery’s management. All other data collected through the program are compiled and reported only in aggregate, ensuring complete confidentiality. The Virginia Wine Coalition does not share or publish any identifying information from individual visits.

Program Details

Each secret shopper visit is priced at $200, which covers evaluator training, visit execution, and a comprehensive written report. A portion of this fee will be spent at your business to cover the costs of food and wine purchased during the assessment. Participation is open to all Virginia wineries seeking to strengthen their hospitality standards and elevate the visitor experience across the state.
